Hot Spots For Instagrammers in Athens

If you’re looking for some serious content for Instagram, you’re in luck. From epic sunsets to street art, the posing cats of Anafiotika to magnificent marble ruins, Athens has no shortage of beautiful sites that don’t require a filter.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier:  The immaculately dressed Evzones with their red caps, pleated skirts, and distinctive tsarouchia shoes, topped with giant black pom poms, are a uniquely Athenian spectacle. Snap them at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, outside Parliament at the top of Syntagma Square. The guard changes every hour; come by at 11 am on Sundays to see them kitted-out in all their glory. (Just don’t ask for a selfie. They are strictly forbidden to smile or speak.)

Panathenaic Stadium: The strong lines, symmetry and perspective of the all-marble Panathenaic Stadium will keep you snap happy for hours. Hosting sporting events since 330 BC, the current horseshoe-shaped arena was built for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and is the finishing line for the Athens Marathon. Climb to the top tier and pack a wide lens to fully appreciate this magnificent structure.

Sunset Snaps: Surrounded on three sides by mountains and by the Saronic Gulf on the other, Athens provides a breathtaking sunset almost every day—and you’re spoilt for spots to capture it. Philopappou, or the Hill of the Muses, is a favorite place to shoot the sun setting over the sea. Other strong contenders include the summit of Lycabettus Hill, Strefi Hill in Exarchia, or, if you’ve got the means to climb over 1,000 meters above sea level, Mount Ymittos, which provides a sweeping view of the metropolis as it fades into night.

Anafiotika: Want to create a Greek island instant without leaving downtown Athens? Climb up to this village within a city above Plaka. Anafiotika’s narrow, labyrinthine streets and lopsided, whitewashed cottages were built by masons from Anafi in the Cyclades, who brought their island architecture with them when they created this immensely picturesque neighborhood in the shadow of the Acropolis.
